Why Its important to Brand Your Boxes Now

While traditional big-box, brick and mortar retail sales are spinning in a downward spiral, direct-to-consumer sales are on the rise. This means that now more than ever, is the perfect time to represent your brand correct and brand your boxes with your logo on them. I always advise my clients that are on the fences about going printed to not be penny-wise and pound-foolish and take the leap!

Nowadays more and more products are available directly on the consumer’s doorstep, and that makes the box branding even more important. Imagine a company like “Hello Fresh” for example. They have made a convenient way for you to cook food while skipping the grocery store trip altogether. They deliver their fresh ingredients to your doorstep, and you just follow the recipe, and wallah! You now have yourself a fresh cooked meal within minutes. In other words, they have brought the grocery store and the convenience to your doorstep and that is what you pay for. Their brand speaks volumes anytime someone sees a nice, printed “Hello Fresh” box at a neighbor’s door. Had the box been made plain, it wouldn’t have the same wow factor.

More companies are now selling direct to the customer in all kinds of industries like food, cosmetics, personal hygiene, apparel, parts & automotive to name a few.  There is just so much out there now that it is important to make noise with branded custom boxes. Consumer choice is incredibly overwhelming and in order to successfully stand out and speak to the client, build loyalty and add value, branding the boxes is an easy facelift with a major impact on the brand. More and more clients of ours are launching subscription services for their customers, and their customers are so excited about the monthly subscription boxes they receive, that some of them have dedicated blog to just blogging and posting about subscription boxes all over social media! Imagine if your personal hygiene brand for example sold a subscription box of a monthly shaving kit for example. Now you have the clients who are subscribed carrying that message all over social media and snapping the box and posting photos of it on IG. What a total game changer. Brand your boxes…It’s a no brainer!

Custom Box Pricing: The Breakdown

A lot of companies I come across want to brand their boxes for the first time. When I put myself in their shoes, I can feel the excitement as it gives their product life and, in some cases, even gives their life’s work a long overdue, unrivaled aesthetic appeal. Here are a few factors that determine the pricing for custom boxes

First off, volume or square footage is the first factor. To break that down further and simplify, the larger the quantity of boxes we run, the bigger the volume discount will be in price. For example, if a customer goes with a 12x12x12 inch box, the difference in square footage and therefore price of 500 boxes versus 5000 boxes will be super significant.

Second of all, the size of the box itself will affect the price—larger boxes will have a heftier price tag and smaller boxes are typically more economic as they use less material. Second and a half, is the thickness of the corrugated itself, as that will have a tremendous impact on price. For instance, a double wall box will cost much more than a single wall as there is twice the amount of material to be used.

Fourth, the number of colors and ink coverage will affect the unit cost. For example, a 1-color logo box will be priced better than a 4-color printed box. Also, the ink coverage is just the percentage of the cox that is printed. A flood coated box with 100% ink coverage will cost much more than a box which has a small logo covering only 10% of the box.

Good luck branding your boxes. The enthusiasm is REAL!

A Student asked me to answer a few questions for a research report regarding her dissertation on "Sustainable Packaging and its Future..."

Questions: 1. How can you define sustainable packaging?
                    2. What is the role of design industry in packaging sustainability?
                    3. What is the role of students in sustainable packaging design?
                    4. Why we need change in packaging?

 Answers:

 1. We define sustainable packaging as that which is recyclable, biodegradable and/or at the least helps minimize landfill. Our philosophy is reduce, reuse, recycle and we encourage our clients to reuse some of their packaging they currently have as well if possible, because it helps keep the earth cleaner and less susceptible to environmental waste and pollution. On the flip side, when it comes to boxes we've found from years of extensive testing that if a box is composed of too much recycled paperboard, then the tape doesn't adhere as well to it when sealing the box. Therefore we recommend a mix of virgin and recycled paperboard for the practical use of boxes.

 2. The design industry has an important role in creating blueprints and proving that sustainable packaging is equal or superior in quality to non-sustainable packaging, while reducing the impact on the environment. At the same time, the design industry must take costs into consideration when designing sustainable packaging. If it will replace non-recyclable and non-sustainable products, it better be cost effective as well because companies and consumers are still very, if not more price conscious than they are with regards to sustainability.

 3. Students are the wave of the future when it comes to staying eco-friendly and they can have a major impact on implementing creative ways to incorporate sustainable packaging into the marketplace. Since they are environmentally conscious as well, they can make a huge difference in the future of sustainable packaging and find ways of further making it the norm in packaging.

 4. For long-term reduction of waste in the world and in order to create a greener, less polluted, less wasteful and consumerist society, it is inevitable that packaging is changed for the better, and it is better that this awareness is raised throughout.
